The short answer
What does it cost to get a food business licensed in Nova Scotia?
Getting a food business licensed in Nova Scotia costs $1,900–$3,400 in year one if you rent a licensed commercial kitchen. The permit itself is only $128 — insurance, inspection-related upgrades and the kitchen deposit account for the rest.
- Food establishment permit $128 a year, renewed on your inspection anniversary.
- Commercial general liability $480 to $1,100 a year at $2M coverage.
- Kitchen deposit a refundable card hold, usually one to two sessions of rental.
Every founder we talk to asks the same question first, and nobody can answer it cleanly: what does it actually cost to go from a home kitchen to a licensed food business? The published fee schedules are only a fraction of it — and the fraction that gets quoted is the smallest one.
The three costs nobody quotes you
Permit fees are public. Inspection lead time, commercial general liability, and the deposit a kitchen asks for before your first booking are not — and together they usually exceed the permits by a factor of four.

What the inspection actually checks
If you are renting a kitchen that already holds a permit, most of the physical requirements are already satisfied. Your inspection covers your process, not the room — which is exactly why renting is cheaper than it looks on paper.
A worked example: $2,340 in year one
| Line item | Hot sauce | Bakery | Catering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food establishment permit | $128 | $128 | $128 |
| Commercial general liability | $540 | $820 | $1,100 |
| Kitchen deposit (refundable) | $170 | $220 | $280 |
| Year-one total | $2,083 | $1,938 | $1,703 |

The kitchen. I had been assuming I needed my own space, and every version of that spreadsheet said no. Once I could rent four hours on a Tuesday, the margin worked at forty jars instead of four hundred.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need my own permit if the kitchen is already licensed?
- Yes. The kitchen’s permit covers the facility; yours covers your business and your process. Both have to be current.
- How long does an inspection take to schedule?
- Two to six weeks depending on region and season. Book before you commit to a launch date or a wholesale order.
- Is the kitchen deposit an extra cost?
- No — on Food Web it is a temporary card hold, released automatically unless a damage claim is approved.
